How to choose your granny flat cladding

Written by Backyard Grannys | May 22, 2017 1:00:00 AM

First we should explain what cladding is. Basically it is the ‘skin’ that goes on the outside walls of your granny flat, in order to protect them from the elements, as well as create the aesthetic you are wanting.

To help you with the decision-making process we have provided an overview of the cladding types we offer and their features including James Hardie Fibre Cement Weatherboards, Brick Veneer and Poly Panels with Acrylic Render.

We have included images of the types of cladding we have used on granny flats we have built across Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney.

Weatherboards

The James Hardie Fibre Cement Weatherboards are: HardiePlank, PrimeLine, Axon, Stria and Linea and these are the most common types of cladding that we use. They are cost effective and durable for your granny flat.

This range comes with a 25 year, 100% warranty and are termite and rot resistant due to it being a cement based product. They are also bushfire rated up to BAL29.

These weatherboards come in a wide range of styles and levels of finish. The range includes some profiles that have hidden fixings and different sheet sizes.

Brick Veneer

Brick Veneer construction is a very low maintenance option, with no painting required, however it is a more expensive option to choose as opposed to traditional cladding. Backyard Grannys has chosen to partner with PGH Bricks and Pavers as our preferred provider. They have a wide range of bricks to choose from with different colours, finishes, textures and glazes. Brick Veneer provides a bushfire rating up to BAL 29.

One important factor to consider when choosing brick veneer for your granny flat, is that there is a 2.5m2 space loss due to the thicker cross section of the wall structure, as opposed to the timber cladding. This is because the granny flats are limited to a total floor area of 60m2, which is measured from the outside walls.

Poly Panel Render

Poly panels with acrylic render are another alternative finish to your granny flat. There are several proprietary systems available in the market place, most commonly used is NRG Greenboard, while Masterwall is another popular choice.

This render system is very modern and has great thermal and sound performance. The only notable downside is that it is not as durable as Fibre Cement Weatherboards or Bricks. When it is damaged it can be difficult to repair. Generally speaking it is a great product with minimal maintenance due to the way the colour is mixed into the acrylic render and coated in the elastomeric membrane. The only maintenance that is required is to hose it down periodically.
