Backyard Grannys recently completed our first Nelson Bay granny flat! The architecturally-designed custom granny flat took 13 weeks to build and is now sitting on Trafalgar Avenue, ready for the clients’ family to move in.

Despite our usual swift build time, this project was anything but ordinary. The existing brick double had to be demolished, along with its concrete slab, to make way for the new build. We replaced it with a modern, more compact garage, with a design which incorporated the same granny flat colour scheme and design themes.

The popular Myall design was the starting point for this granny flat with some modifications to suit the site including the new garage required as part of the build.

The Merbau decking on the adjoined front patio leads straight through glass sliding doors to the spacious lounge room. The open-plan living design, paired with an abundance of natural lighting from glass doors and windows, makes for a vibrant space.

The connected kitchen features all the regular fixtures including oven, stovetop, sink and dishwasher, as well as an alcove for a decent-sized fridge. The space features an off-white wall colour to continue the cozy vibes, as light timber flooring carries this feeling down the hall to the other rooms.

The light grey carpet meets the hall in the entryway of the two bedrooms. A large window features in both bedrooms, covering the space in plenty of light. The same off-white paint covers the walls in these rooms as well as the bathroom. Another smaller window lights up the bathroom – a feature which is amplified by the modern style vanity mirror and glass of the large shower. It comes with the usual fixtures of vanity and toilet, as well as a handy medium sized laundry sink.

Outside the soft colour scheme continues, with white trim and light timber where possible. A lovely garden bed occupies the front yard, which is met by a wooden fence – ensuring privacy whilst keeping with the light wooden motif.

Our first granny flat in Nelson Bay has delivered a great result and with plenty of enquiries for this area, it is proving to be a popular option for holiday accommodation and we will be back building in this pristine part of Port Stephens soon.
