Building a two storey granny flat is a step-by-step process, and in this blog series we are walking you through each phase, using a recent project as our granny flat case study. In previous blogs we’ve covered planning (blog 1), site preparation (blog 2), pouring the slab and constructing the frame (blog 3).

This blog we focus on the lock up stage of the project which includes installation of doors, windows, the cladding and roofing.

The first step in the lock up is the installation of the Colorbond roof which in this case was a double skillion roof design. We then installed the windows and doors followed by the cladding of the ground floor garage. Our client chose standard weatherboards for this, which were painting to contrast with the upper floor colours.

One of the different things about this specific project was the Selection of Colorbond cladding for the first floor cladding. This was also tricky given the double skillion roof line shapes that we needed to cut in and match. Just like any building challenge we’re given, we found a solution and the cladding was successfully completed.

During the lock up stage we also complete the waterproofing of the patio on the first floor which will be tiled at a later point in the project.

To complete the outside, we removed the site scaffold and then built the external timber stairs leading up to the first floor entry patio.

In the next blog we’ll be explaining the process for the internal works, but if you’d like to discuss the possibility of a two storey granny flat, call 4947 2800 or click here to contact us.
